Exemplary student

I spent Friday morning with a talented young lady
teaching her how to make a newsboy hat for a 4-H project.

#1  Cutting out the pattern pieces using a rotary cutter and pattern weights.
You can make your own pattern weights buy wrapping large washers in strips of scrap fabric.  It is so much quicker than pinning!  Kailee also learned how to follow the pattern pieces to the grain of the fabric.  The pieces were set on the bias so that when sewing them together, there is more give to help the rounded pieces fit together.

#2  Sewing the six triangular pieces of the hat together to make the top of the hat.

#3  Sewing the band on to the bottom of the hat.
The trick here is to use the bias of those triangular pieces to ease them into fitting the size of the band.

                                                       #4  Sewing the lining.
The same process as the outside of the hat.  Kailee picked a gorgeous purple color for the        lining.  A wonderful contrast to the outside of the hat.  A great way to make a statement!

#5  Pinning, pinning, and more pinning.

#6  Cutting out the interfacing for the brim of the hat.
A heavy-weight interfacing is used to give the brim structure.

                                                                 #7  The best part!
Turning the hat right side out and then finishing the bottom of the hat with top-stitching to fully enclose all the seams.  This makes the hat look perfect!

Nice job, Kailee!  I can't wait for you to come for your next lesson!
